DC Universe Online - First Impressions

Image
It's been awhile since I've blogged about anything Geeky... guess I've been spending way too much time doing house renovations :) This past weekend I picked up DC Universe Online , the new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the super heroes and villains from DC Comics. These heroes and villains include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, Catwoman and many other that I've loved for years! I've only been playing it on and off over the past few days... but I thought I'd share my initial thoughts of the game. So here they are in no particular order. First off, I just LOVED the Collector's Edition of the game. Since I was trading in a number of my used games at GameStop , I actually had enough trade in credit to pay the full amount of the Collector's Edition. I've never bought a collector's edition of a game before... just never saw any value in playing a extra $20-30 for a game. For this one, I'm sure glad I did! The ...

Iron Man 2 Trailer!

I SOOOO can't wait to see this movie!!

Great Day to Geek Out!

Image
YAAAAYYYY!!! I've been waiting for today for a year. The new video game Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 hits the store today. I LOVED the first one. I thought the game was fantastic, even on the Wii which is no where close to a hard core gaming system. The story was better than pretty much every single Marvel movie that has come out in years! I was hooked on the story from beginning to end! To make Alliance 2 even cooler in my geeky opinion is the fact that it's based on Marvel's Civil War storyline. Civil War was the reason I started reading comic books again after a 12 year absences. To have one of my favorite stories put into one of my favorite video games, is a fanboy dream come true :-) Also today, X-Men Origins: Wolverine comes out on Blu-Ray. Sure. The movie wasn't great. In fact, how Wolvie got his adamantium skeleton and claws and how he lost his memory was just plain dumb. But it was still a pretty fun movie with lots of high points. It's de...

Planet Hulk Movie!

Ok! The geeky fanboy in me LOVES THIS!! Last year one of the best comics I read was Planet Hulk. It was probably one of the coolest Hulk stories I've ever read. So guess how excited I was when I found this new trailer for an animated movie of that comic?? You guessed it! Pretty excited indeed. Check it out! (If you're reading this on Facebook or the church blog check out this link !) More Planet Hulk Info

Going to be a GREAT Weekend!

Image
This weekend is just perfect for a geek like myself!  First of all, it's the release of the new Wolverine movie!!!  YAHHHOOO!!!!  I'm so pumped to see this!  From everything that I've been reading and hearing it should be great. Also, it's the first weekend in May and that  means FREE COMIC BOOK DAY !  My kids and I love this day.  Nothing like getting a couple of free comic books to enjoy together!  Check out the website to find a place near you to get your free books!  This is a great way to encourage your kids to be regular readers.  I love reading... and gotta admit that I've been slacking off on reading with my kids.  This is a great reminder to myself on building reading into the lives of my kids! Have an awesome time reading and geeking out this weekend!

Hulk vs Wolverine ROCKS!

Image
Picked up the new Marvel Animation DVD "HULK Vs".  Watched the first disk "HULK vs Wolverine" during lunch...  and man oh man was it ever awesome!!! First off, I just gotta say how much I love these Marvel animated movies!  All of them, even the Young Avengers, have just been great so far!  I love cartoons... and I do find there is something missing with all animated movies going the digital/computer format... I find this more traditional approach to animation really brings the comic book to life! Now... Hulk vs Wolverine is short.... I mean REALLY short... only 37 minutes.  But it's 37 minutes of non-stop Hulk-Smashing, Wolverine-Slashing action!  Love it!  They touch on a huge amount of Wolverine's origin... some of which looks quite similar to the new Wolverine movie coming out. This DVD is definitely worth it for the geek out factor!  In fact, I can't wait to watch disk 2 and see the green guy take on Thor!

Hulk Vs

I love these Marvel animated movies! The latest one is coming out this January and features three of my favorite characters: Hulk, Wolverine and Thor. Check out the trailer! Or check out www.Marvel.com to see the video there! I LOVE THIS STUFF!

Messiah CompleX

Image
During my vacation I brought the trade paper back edition of X-Men: Messiah CompleX to read with me by the pool on the ship. THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! X-Men hasn't always been one of the comics that I've read on a regular basis.  I've kind of jumped in and out of it over the years... mainly because I just found the whole everywhere you turn is more and more mutants with increasingly stupid powers.  The book House of M was great for finally getting rid of the over crowded mutant population and really got me hooked on the last remaining mutants struggling for survival. Messiah CompleX deals with the first birth of a mutant since the events of House of M.  And everyone wants to get their hands on this baby in hopes of controlling the future of mutantkind . Everything about this book was great.  The story was just fantastic!  The only thing I would have like to see more of would be the two different alternate futures that were talked about... the story only covered one of them.  ...

Spiderman Sketch

I did some more drawing today with the kids. Here's the latest attempt to rediscover the artist in me. This has been a great stress relieve over the last couple of days :-) Definitely will be doing more of this.

Captain America Sketch

Image
Last night I sat down and picked up a pencil and started sketching... that was the first time I've done this in YEARS! I had such a fun and relaxing evening doing this! I gotta do it more often. Here is the first sketch to come out of this attempt to rediscover the artist in me :-)

Free Comic Book Day TOMORROW!

Image
For all you comic books fan (and those of you who are secret comic fans)... tomorrow is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. This year's selection of free comics looks GREAT! Definitely want to grab the X-Men and Marvel Adventures... and looking at branching out a little with a bunch of the titles from the smaller publishing companies. You can find your closest comic shop at this site . I'm going to be at Carry-On Comics & Books (my regular supplier of all things geeky!) at 32 King St. North in Waterloo at 10am tomorrow. If you're planning on checking it out with your kids why not stop by at the same time as me and my clan... then we usually head to McDonald's to enjoy junk food and free comics! Now... if only I could work out going to see the IRON MAN movie that evenin...

Woodside May Youth Retreat

Here is a promo video of the teaching series I'm doing up at Joy Bible Camp this coming May long weekend. I've wanted to do a teaching series on comic book characters for YEARS so I'm really pumped about this one! Enjoy the promo and let me know what you think. (If you're reading this note on Facebook, the video can be found on my video page )

Captain Canuck Movie

Image
OK... this is probably one of those comic book movies that you never expected (or wanted) to see. But there is something pretty appealing (in my head anyways) about seeing this Canadian hero hitting the big screen... or maybe the direct to DVD screen... I happened to stumble on this little piece of news and thought I'd put the blurb up here for all to see. Canada’s only superhero Captain Canuck is soon to become the star of Canada’s first action/adventure film. Based on the original comic book by Richard Comely, this feature film will turn Canada into an action-packed playground complete with an exploding CN Tower. Personally, I'd rather see the CN Tower being turned into an alien space ship and blast off into orbit... but that's just me I guess :-) The web site about this movie can be found here ... but they have no more information then what I just posted. You can also check out the official Captain Canu...

New Iron Man Trailer ROCKS!!!!

Image
Oh my goodness!!!!! The new Iron Man trailer is online and it is AWESOME!!!! You'll definitely want to head over to this site and check it out! Things I love about it. Love all the heavy metal music. Seems appropriate with all the metal flying around in the movie :) I wasn't sold on the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark... but that has completely faded. He is awesome in the role from what I've seen so far! The Iron Man suit is AWESOME! Love it! Iron Man is fast becoming one of my favorite comic characters. The comic is great. And now this movie looks great. I'm certainly hopping Marvel doesn't mess this guy up like they just did with Spider-Man's A New Day comic changes and the really bad Spider-Man 3.

Going to Geek Out

Image
Seems like it's been weeks since I've hit the comic book store... oh wait! It has been! With the Elmira Theater show running for the past 3 weekends (which by the way was selected to be part of the 2008 Western Ontario Drama League Festival!!!) it feels like the month just flew by without my weekly dose of comic geeky goodness. So, after a lunch meeting today, I'll be swinging by to pick up my stash of comics... and tomorrow morning while the kids are at school and my wife is out with some friends I'll curl up by the fake fire place with a coffee and enjoy getting caught up in my favorite issues. As a BIG Dr. Doom fan. He's definitely one of my favorite baddies! I'm glad he's turned up in recent issues of Fantastic Four and now again in The Mighty Avengers. Don't know what it is... but there's something about this guy's ego that I just love :-)

A New Captain America and Bye-Bye Spidey

Image
I gotta get to the comic book store today since yesterday the newest issue of Captain America came out. In this issue we see the return of Captain America since Cap died last year. I've been a big fan of this Captain America series. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they're going to be going with this storyline. In other comic stuff, I've decided to stop reading The Amazing Spider-Man. I'm sure all you comic geeks out there are all totally aware with the One More Day and Brand New Day fiasco that has been plaguing Spider-Man the last few months. Since I just loved the direction that Peter Parker's life has been going since the Civil War, I decided to stick it out and give it a fair chance... but with these changes I just can't stomach it. The main reason I'm dropping Spider-Man is what I'm calling the Friends-dilemma. I got back into reading comics because I LOVED the Civil War series and what it meant to many of my favorite characters....

Captain America Rocks!!

Image
I gotta admit... sometimes I'm pretty clueless as to what is going on around me. I never buy the newest technology, and I never catch the cool TV show as it premieres. Sometimes it takes a big news flash to open my eyes to some cool stuff right in front of me... and this is definitely the case with the Captain America comic series! It took killing Cap to get to pick up an issue. And boy am I ever glad I did! I've never read anything with Captain America before. It wasn't until reading Civil War that Cap even came on my radar. I guess it's just the Canadian in me that just assumed that the character wouldn't be relatable if I wasn't American, or if I wasn't a war story nut. Civil War changed my perspective of the character. Sure, he's all American. But he's all that is great about the US. His morals, his values, his respect for others. His love of liberty and equality for all. His role in Marvel's Civil War was great and really gave me an ...

Bad EBay Bad!

Image
ARRGGHHH! This weekend I was bidding on an item on EBay. It was four trade paperback volumes of the New Avengers comic. Since I have volume 5 this would have been a perfect item to win. I was winning the auction right up to the last hour. I figured I had put in a good enough high bid to get it... Well, I was outbid. Now normally this wouldn't be a big deal... but the outbid notice only arrived in my Inbox 2.5 hours after the close of the auction! There was more then enough time to receive the notice then make another bid... Oh well. I guess this is God's way of telling me I need to not be so cheap and that I should support my local comic book store :-) I guess Volume 1 will have to be my celebration present after writing my seminary mid-term next week :-)

Thor Returns

Image
By far one of my favorite comics right now is the new new Thor series with story by J.Michael Straczynski and art by Olivier Coipel. I just picked up issue number 3 today and just loved it. This new series is a fantastic way to be introduced to this classic character. I love when you can pick up a new title of an old character and not be required to have tons of previous knowledge in order to enjoy the book. The story so far is simple yet interesting. Thor, the Norse god of thunder, was dead. As our all the Norse gods. And now Thor is back and has begun a search for the other gods who are lost among humanity. In this new issue he finds the first of the missing Asgardians... but not before confronting Iron Man. Normally this should have been a happy reunion between former Avengers and friends... but Thor is none too happy about the fact that Iron Man created a clone of Thor during the Civil War. The art is stunning. Every page is beautiful. It's no surprise that issue 1 and...

Iron Man Trailer!

Image
The trailer for the new Iron Man movie is online. You can check it out here . Iron Man in one of the comics I've started reading a lot since Civil War. I wasn't much of a fan as a kid but he's really growing on me. The movie really looks true to the comic. Which is always a good thing in my books! This movie could be as good as the first Spider-Man. Maybe that's just geeky wishful thinking... but one can hope right? :)
